Food and Cuisine


The people of Gujarat have perfected the art of vegetarian cooking and their cuisine is delectable and mouth- watering. These are the must-haves of Gujarati cuisines:

  • Dabeli

    A spicy snack made by mixing boiled potatoes with specially prepared spices, putting the mixture in a bun and serving it with chutneys made from tamarind, date, garlic, red chilies, etc.

  • Kadhi-Khichdi

    Yoghurt based tempered curry served with softened rice cooked with lentlis and ghee (clarified butter)

  • Kansaar

    Simple yet delicious dessert made from coarsely ground wheat, water, ghee, milk and jaggery - enough to give a sweet blend.

  • Makai Chevada

    Another savoury snack made from fresh corn cobs, ghee, green chillies, ginger, salt, sugar, coriander seeds, coriander leaves, mustard seeds, pinch of asafoetida and oil or ghee.

  • Sheera

    A sweet and tempting dessert made from wheat flour, ghee, sugar and water.

  • Traditional Gujarati Thali

    Comprises of one or two steamed or fried snacks called farsans, a green vegetable, a tuber or a gourd shaak, a kathol, one or more yogurt dishes, raita, rice or khichdi, toor dal, and sweets like halwas, basundi or shrikhand.
