Food and Cuisine


The traditional Kollam cuisines are Appam, Stew, Fish Moilee, Chilli Garlic Prawns  and Fish in shredded coconut which are prepared with locally cultivated aromatic spices that give the authentic taste to Kerala dishes.  The sumptuous delights of Kochi are prepared in coconut oil. Since coconut is available in abundance and it is loaded with numerous health benefits, locals have been using it for delicious food preparations since old times.

  • Appam

    It has a savoury taste and appears like a pancake. It is made from fermented rice batter and coconut milk. It makes a great dish when eaten normally for breakfast with a stew.

  • Cashewnuts

    Kollam is known for it's cashewnut processing industry and is the largest processed cashew exporter in the world.

  • Fish Moilee

    It is a unique Kerala fish recipe which has coconut milk as the main ingredient. It is flavored with cardamom and black pepper and simmered slowly till cooked. It goes well with rice.

  • Meena Peera

    In this dish fish is cooked with a generous proportion of shredded coconut, adding to the depth of flavour along with curry leaves and crushed spices. This dish combines well with rice.

  • Stew

    A traditional stew can be made of chicken or mutton or just vegetables with a blend of aromatic spices. It has thick gravy which is enjoyed by the locals as an accompaniment with appams or rice.
