Keylong is the district headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti districts. At an altitude of 3156 m. The locale is situated on the main trade route between the Rohtang and Baralacha passes above the Bhaga River. In the past, Keylong was home to the Moravian missionaries. During summers, it becomes refreshingly green, striking against the backdrop of brown hills and snow clad peaks. Because of its panoramic setting the Hon'ble C.G. Bruce likened Keylong to a barbaric jewel, a roughly cut emerald in a bronze and silver setting. It has several Buddhist monasteries and the ones that can be conveniently visited from Keylong are Guru Ghantal, associated with both Padma Sambhava and the great teacher and translator, 'Lotsaba' Rinchensang-po: Regarded to be the oldest one in Lahaul. Kardang is one of the most revered places of the Drug-pa sect. Tayul and Gemur are other important monasteries near Keylong. The monasteries of Shashur and Triloknath are other famous ones to visit.Keylong has excellent outlets for the purchase of carpets, Kullu shawls, Lois (big shawls or throws), Baby Shawls, Mufflers, Stoles, Ponchos, Local Tweeds, Caps and other Kullu handloom and handicraft items. Readymade garments in Merino wool, 'Angora', 'Pashmina', 'Pullas' (grass made bedroom slippers) and woolen jackets are easily available. Chinese ceramic utensils, cloth and other local ornaments, stones, gems & jewellery etc. can be purchased from the Tibetan shops. These shops also sell spices like 'Kala Zeera', and Seabuckthorn (Chharma) fruit juice.
