Balasore, the headquarters of the district, was an important maritime town in medieval times. Some portions of the town were occupied by the French and the Dutch which were named Farasidinga and Dinamardinga. The ruins of the foreign possessions still exist. The main Baleshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (who is also known as Baleshwar).
Balasore is a place of scenic beauty, major tourist attractions and the Dutch and French influence from yesteryears. There are many historical monuments and various old temples in the area. There are a few hill ranges in the region also.
The nearest airport is in Bhubaneswar about 200 km away.
Balasore railway station is an important station on the Howrah-Chennai main line of the South Eastern Railway.
Balasore has a well developed roadways. It can be reached from Bhubaneswar and Kolkata both by the NH-5 road. Buses from Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Kolkata and Baripada are readily available.
