Nanda Devi Temple


A temple revered by Garwal and Kumaon regions of Uttarakhand State. The presiding deity is believed to be destroyer of evil and bad omens. Founded 1000 Years ago, Nanda Devi Temple is devoted to the patron goddess of the Chand Era. The most popular fair is held in Almora and people from all over the country participate in large numbers; it is celebrated on the ‘ashtami’ of ‘bhadra shukla’. Two images of Nananda and Sunanda are made with the banana trunk. The ceremonial prayers are followed by the ritual of ‘Bali’ before the goddesses amidst the drum beats and vigorous dance performances.
