Ashoka Pillar


Placed in the premises of Allahabad fort which  was  built in 16th Century  stands  a gigantic Ashokan pillar which  belongs to  Mauryan Era. The pillar is  made of  polished  sandstone, is approximately 10.6 meters high and could be dated back to 3rd Century BC. The  pillar  bears  various inscriptions  which includes inscriptions  by  Ashok, Samudragupta and Jahangir. It is believed that this pillar was initially erected  at  Kaushambi and later moved to Allahabad.
