There are several markets in Thanjavur that one can scour and all of them are budget-friendly to a certain extent. The biggest market in the city is the one near Thanjavur Palace. One can also head to the East Main Road market or Poompuhar that has outlets across the state set up by the Government of Tamil Nadu to promote handicrafts and arts from the state. Thanjavur is extremely famous for its Tanjore paintings that are mostly of gods and goddesses, and bobblehead doll toys. Another popular item sold here is the beautifully done silk saree with broad borders and intricate motifs of zari work. One can also shop for several kinds of brass structures and bronze statues. Weaving, painting, jewellery, woodworks are some of the other popular handicrafts. Another interesting buy is Nagore-made toys that are produced out of coconut!
