Popular opinion insists that Manipur is the home of polo and the British adopted the game from traditional Manipuri sagol kangjei in the mid-19th century and made it popular. Manipur’s polo season has five main tournaments, played international style on Manipuri ponies. The season begins with the international tournament during the Sangai Tourism Festival in the last week in November and ends with the Governor’s Cup in March. The traditional style called pana kangjei is often seen as an exhibition item at these tournaments. If you get to a game during your visit consider yourself lucky to be watching these beautiful animals and humans come together in an elegant spectacle.
