The Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, under the administration of the Ramakrishna Mission, offers a selection of varied courses. Birla Planetarium

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the Birla Planetarium or Taramandal on July 2, 1963. It makes for an interesting visit as it houses a Celestron C-14 telescope and accessories such as ST6 CCD camera and solar filter in its astronomical observatory. There is an astronomy gallery with paintings and celestial models of well-known astronomers. The electronics laboratory is there for design and fabrication of science equipment. One can view over 100 projects on astronomy here, that look into its various facets including astro-physics, space science and the myths about the planets and stars.

Science City holds the record of being the largest science centre in India. It has many attractions for adults and children alike."Science on a Sphere" is the latest addition to the centre and uses a giant animated globe to show interesting information about planets. Tourists can also take a ride in a slow-moving electric car as it takes one through exhibits of different stages of evolution. The light and sound effects add to the thrilling experience. A unique feature is the Digital Panorama, which depicts the milestones of human evolution in the last six million years. Tourists can also visit an amusement park and a dinosaur museum inside the centre. There are facilities of games as well.

Showcasing the growth and development of the police department of Kolkata from the pre-Independence era to the time after Partition, this museum makes for an interesting visit. There is a separate gallery showcasing the evolution of guns. Weapons of revolutionaries during the pre-Independence days are also on display, along with items that were seized at the time of the freedom struggle. You can also find out more about the 64 Netaji files in this museum. It has been set up at the former home of social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy at 113, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road.

Nehru Children's Museum

Nehru Children’s Museum was established as a tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on Children’s Day – November 14, 1972 – which is also the great leader’s birthday. It’s spread over four floors, which have been divided into Dolls Gallery, Toys Gallery, Ramayana Gallery and Mahabharata Gallery. The museum is noted for housing an extensive collection of dolls that have been collected from about 88 countries from around the world. These are apt representations of various cultures and traditions from all over the world. Tourists will especially be mesmerised by the Oriental and Western varieties. Moreover, there are clay models of various events and scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. The museum also organises workshops and competitions for kids.

Birla Industrial and Technological Museum

A highly engaging museum for kids and adults alike, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum makes for an interesting visit. It has 12 galleries, including Fascinating Physics, Transport, Motive Power, Biotechnology, Metals, Electricity, Television, Life Science, Underground Coal Mine (a mock-up), Popular Science, Mathematics and Children’s Gallery. It is the first scientific and industrial museum in India and is situated on Gurusaday Road. There are regular science shows and sky observation programmes organised here.

Jadavpur University

Boasting a sprawling campus that is lined with tall trees and picturesque vistas, Jadavpur University makes an interesting stopover while visiting Kolkata. This globally well-known university is known for providing excellent opportunities for advanced study and research. It was established by a legislation from the Government of India on December 24, 1955. It used to function as the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education earlier, and later was amalgamated to NCE, which then looked after the College of Engineering and Technology that was almost working akin to a university by 1940. It has had the best of faculty including Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Sir Gurudas Banerjee, Ananda Coomarswamy, Surendra Nath Banerjee, Sakharam Ganesh Deoskar and many others.

Indian Museum

The Indian Museum is among the largest and the oldest museums in India and has rare collections of antiques, armour and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies, and Mughal paintings. It was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, in 1814. The founder curator was Dr Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist. It has six sections comprising 35 galleries of cultural and scientific artefacts, namely Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany. Exhibits of the museum include dinosaur skeletons, replicas of the 2nd century BC Barhut Stupa, etc. A 4,000-year-old Egyptian Mummy and the urn that is said to contain the relics of Lord Buddha are particular highlights.
