The Indian Independence movement is one of the most remarkable freedom struggles the world has witnessed, bringing together people from diverse religious, political and social backgrounds with one single objective - to get rid of the oppressive British Raj. Lasting 90 years, from 1857 (the year of India 's First War of Independence, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857) to 1947 (the year India became independent), it is also noteworthy for its phenomenally successful use of non-violence.
