Located on the banks of the Tunga River, Shimoga, headquarters of the district of the same name in Karnataka, has some of the most scenic countryside in India. Clothed with superb tropical forests, the district is famous for some exotic locales including several lakes and river valleys.
The region has a long and colourful history when it was under the control of Satavahana dynasty and the Chalukyas of Badami in 3rd and 7th centuries AD respectively.
